What we mean by youth
For a long time, I reflected on the concept of youth in particular on how to define it on behalf of the Grupo Marcos. Friends and blog participants have always spoken, I’m 60 years old … To our delight, Léon Denis, in the 1920s, elaborates a description of youth that expresses our understanding of it. The following text is from Leon Denis called Idealist Youth and Progress. At all times of the history of the world, having received great gifts, the youth always had an obligation to carry out great tasks. At present, their responsibilities increase in proportion to the gravity of the circumstances. To rebuild a building that falls under the weight of the centuries, it is essential to reform it from the foundations, that is, from the base. The same concept applies to societies when they are perishing: it is on the basis that it is necessary to recover them; it happens that the living foundation of humanity is youth, that is, future mankind, the men of tomorrow. There are, however, two types of youth: one is frivolous, foolish, demented, and regards his gifts as a useless force which he is permitted to waste anyway and consume as quickly as possible, as a prodigal who spends the mischief of a miser. His maxim is: “Youth must pass.” And it passes, in effect, as the roses pass, as the floods pass, as the hours pass – nothing stays. We will not deal with this kind of youth, for it is not she who will work on the significant reforms of the country and of humanity.
However, there is another youth, whose maxim is precisely contrary to that, because these young men preserve the poetry and freshness of the early hours of their souls until they advance to the ripe old age and even in the old age. It is they who, having preserved the great enthusiasms, the sacred fire, the ardor of thought and the haughty and radiant religion of the ideal, will save the future; were made for great devotions and are prepared for noble and glorious sacrifices. Already in what I say to the first ones, however much the generous appeals are multiplied, echoing these words of the poet: “Give me your twenty years since you do not use them for anything!” They reply with a skeptical, ironic smile. But if we ask others to bow under the sublime flags that lead directly to the battlefield, they will answer, “We are here!” The youth is very beautiful, but this one has greatness, which constitutes an additional beauty!
Let us analyze the role it will have to play and the conditions under which it should begin its noble work.
The elite youth I am referring to is worthy of a title that she will glorify and immortalize one day: this title is the idealistic youth!
